One creative writing class is all that it took for Jessica Simpson to change her major from pre-med to film and communication studies. The independent consultant for the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center now spends her time marketing the performing arts center as a “world class performing arts center” and booking acts.
On April 4, Simpson visited the Principles of PR class and gave students the following advice:
- “You need to be a jack of all trades,” she said. Don’t just be able to write press releases. You need to write press releases, manage social media, interact with clients and so much more.
- Love what you do. “At the end of the day,” she said, “you’re doing something you love and that’s where the reward comes from.”
- Social media is an excellent, free tool. Use it wisely.
- Know your audience, and book acts that pique the interest of your audience.
