John Richardson of Forte Marketing Group paid our PR class a visit Friday and brought with him great advice for future PR practitioners. Forte is a Birmingham-based boutique agency that has received national attention for its outstanding work.
Forte’s ability to get its clients’ names out there is part of what makes them so successful. Richardson, Digital and Interactive Director, emphasized the importance of getting your clients’ names on as many channels as possible. Social media outlets are important tools, but videos and news releases can’t be left out.
For students trying to break into the PR field, Richardson said it was important to market themselves. Think of yourself as one of your clients. You’ve got to get your name out there and meet the right people.
Richardson gave a few tips about where to start:
1. Network. Get to know people in your field of interest. You never know which relationships could lead to a job in the future.
2. Self-promote. There are a lot of people who want the same job, so let people know what makes you stand out. Show them what you can do.
3. Get online. LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, WordPress, and Vimeo are outlets for you to show what you can do. You can connect with others in your field and keep up with what’s going on in the industry.
4. Be tech-savvy. Know which technology is available to promote your client and know how to use it. It is essential to be up-to-date with the ever-changing digital world.
