What influences Social Media users and the average adult?

This semester I will be following the blog PRNewser.

I read a post that conducted a survey on the factors that influenced social media users versus average adults when it came to starting an online search for a specific product/service. It was extremely interesting to see the results that came from this survey.

I was personally surprised by the number one factor, because it was not what I was expecting. According to the survey, face-to-face communication is the biggest factor for people to start an online search for a specific product or service. Social media users were at 41.4% and average adults were at 36.1% for this factor. Another surprising result was that cable TV and radio beat out MySpace and Facebook.

This blog opened my eyes to all the factors that influence us to search for a product. I never would have thought that face-to-face communication is actually the number one motivator for us to search for a new product. I guess being a “social media person” I would have assumed that Facebook/Twitter or advertising would have been the number one factor.
